40 Years on since Prince first blessed the UK

Words: Dan Smith

Ever since ‘Purple Rain’, Prince has been a household name, and rightly so, but can you believe it was only 3 years earlier Prince played his debut gig in the UK, or more specifically, Lyceum Ballroom, London.

This was Prince’s first appearance and he wouldn’t actually return for five years. Only playing 9 songs at the show, fans were left hungry for more and the UK finally had a taste of ‘His Royal Badness’.

With Prince being a naturally quiet and private individual, we can’t be sure why the set was so short and why in his early years he rarely visited the UK.

But he certainly made up for it when he went on tour again in the UK back in 2014, kicking off with a 34 song set in Birmingham.

The mystery which surrounded Prince, and still continues to do so is just one of the many reasons why people adored the star!
