10th June 1972: ‘Metal Guru’ ends it’s four week stint at UK Number One

Words: Dan Smith

The fourth and final number one for London band T. Rex, ‘Metal Guru’ followed on from their previous timeless hits ‘Hot Love’ and ‘Get It On’.

With groovy riffs and funky hooks, Marc Bolan would have you tentatively hanging on each word. Despite facing huge success in the 70’s, T. Rex are very rarely discussed nowadays on social media, unlike other big bands from the same era.

Despite perhaps going underappreciated in the modern era, the glam rock group certainly made an impact with many of their songs featuring in huge films such as ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and more recently ‘Baby Driver’.

Admittedly not top of my playlist, ‘Metal Guru’ is just an all round class song and definitely should be entering your summer playlists!
