The Garnetts are hard to put into a box. With indie-pop vibes, rock ‘n’ roll swagger and funk infused basslines, the Liverpool four-piece have hop-scotched from genre with great success. Latest release “Something Between Us” is no different, oozing rawness and emotion.
The brainchild of brothers Ben and Jacob Jones, the Scouse outfit formed in late 2018. With Chris Cannon on Bass and Jacob Naylor on Drums, this is the band’s second release this year and their fourth altogether. Priding themselves on the versatility provided by two lead singers, as well as a courageous and free-flowing view on genre, the Garnetts are one of the most intriguing and interesting bands to come out of Liverpool in recent years. Having already made appearances at the 02 Academy Liverpool and a string of festivals in the diary, the band have the capability to go from strength-to-strength in a post-Covid (fingers crossed!) music scene.
The single itself is a high tempo dose of emotive rawness, backed up with slightly more dreamy guitar lines. With clear funk inspiration lingering, the track is hard to put into a genre box, but who wants to be put in a box anyway? With younger brother Ben on vocals for this track, there is undoubtable honesty and (dare I say it) vulnerability in the lyrics. However, this is propped up by a bouncy and powerful bassline, keeping the tempo and mood up. The song’s mood does, however, oscillate freely throughout- the band are not afraid to bring it up, then let it simmer down.
Overall, though, it’s effective and comes together to form a really strong and perfectly listenable track.
With a fluid view on genre, as well as honest and emotive lyrics, the Garnetts’ second release of the year is a hit.
