TOP OF THE POPS IS DEAD – 15 Years Ago Today

Words: Dan Smith

Top Of The Pops. The MTV of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and the 90’s. The popular BBC show saw incredible performances from the likes of Nirvana, Oasis, The Housemartins, New Order, Blur and David Bowie. Spanning the course of 42 years, the iconic show was usually the only place you were able to get a first-hand glimpse of the days music heroes.

It can’t be understated the importance Top Of The Pops had on British culture in its 42 years stint on prime time television. Not only was it the hub for all things music, it inspired pop culture and fashion.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of equipment and technology, the show would usually appear static and this never really changed in the whole history of the show, which arguably lead to its demise and reduction of viewers.

In the end, it came down to one last hurrah, the likes of Beyonce, Robbie Williams, Wham and Madonna playing out the final show, meanwhile, disgraced disk jockey Jimmy Saville was host. I hope it isn’t lost on you the true importance the show had on inspiring millions into the world of music.
