Words: Dani Tomlinson.
‘Black and Blue’, the latest release From Earlestown’s finest four The K’s, has certainly cemented the band as masters of their craft as they are able to paint a lyrical picture of social realism throughout the song.
I must admit, when I listen to the lyrics and look at what the band have stated about the context, I can’t help but be invested in the 3 and a half minute story they’ve created, because it’s so relatable but also, I appreciate that it’s so honest. It’s not a song that’s cryptic or has any hidden subtext and I think sometimes we need that.
The musical detail in this song which I think is a delightful touch are those short, snappy, alliterative repetitions, “When she sees me then she swears, then she swears I’m gonna get it.”
I just think it adds an additional hook from the chorus, cementing themselves in your eardrums. Of course, we have those classic signature riff explosions from the guitar trio (Ryan Breslin, Jamie Boyle & Dexter Baker) jumping in from the very beginning. Already, you know this is going to be a gig bopper, particularly during the pause in the final chorus. I think it’s a great crowd teaser right before the end. It builds up a balloon of energy popped by drummer, Nathan Peers which elevates that final line.
