Words: Dani Tomlinson
If you thought you had to wait a while for a new release from The Pearl Harts, think again! Less than a year after their second album, “LOVE CHAOS”, they return to 2024 with latest single, “PURE.”
I have to say, I always feel empowered when I listen to The Pearl Harts. They’re such a breath of Riot Grrrl air and energy, and their songs are like a musical pep-talk. This track in particular breaks down that messed up ideal that women have to be a picture perfect puppet on a patriarchal societal string. That women can embrace their darker and inner desires without being shamed for it. I’m not saying the song makes me want to walk out the door and rob a bank, but my God, it feels great to dial up the volume on this song and chant the words, “I don’t wanna be pure anymore” over and over again.
The lyrical content is packed with mantras like “It’s alright to choose, gonna cross the line/we write all the rules, gonna cross the line” which are elevated by the signature Pearl Harts musical style. Once again, we’re delighted with their sharp, feisty riffs that are heavy on the rock ‘n’ roll with a delectable streak of punk, and grungy bass notes running through it. With all these elements, I just think it motivates and encourages us to dare to be brave. An apt song to be released (no doubt intentional) on International Women’s Day.
And they’re not stopping there. The Pearl Harts are set to support Feeder for a couple of dates on their UK tour less than a week after this release, followed by 3 headline UK tour dates of their own. If this new song is anything to go by, I can’t wait for album number 3!
