With their first release of 2024, the highly anticipated band SHADE are back and better than ever with their brand new single ‘Break Out’ – and breaking out is certainly what they’re doing! Originally hailing from Manchester, SHADE, who have already felt the glow of success by gaining 300k streams on their previous release and supporting Louis Tomlinson at ‘Away from Home Festival’, have been labelled as the band to watch, and their latest single certainly proves why.
In true ‘SHADE’ fashion, ‘Break Out’ begins punchily, with a high energy guitar riff from lead guitarist Ben Mcdonough and piercing vocals from frontman Luke Anthony Owens. However, rather than rushing straight through the track with vigorous enthusiasm, the band instead pauses just for a split second, creating a dynamic audio experience for listeners, as we wait with bated breath, eager to see where they take the track next. Recommencing with a heart throbbing smashing of the drum kit from Oliver Clare, SHADE continue to impress us throughout the song with their incredible ensemble work. Impressively, there is no band member that overly ‘stands out’- of course all of them are well showcased, but blend seamlessly with one another, creating a unique, unanimous sound. One element of teamwork that really did stand out to me was the song’s usage of backing vocals. While I know backing vocals are used by most bands in order to subtly fill out the voice of their lead singer, SHADE instead smartly exaggerates their backing vocals so they really shine through, especially in the chorus. Honestly, I absolutely loved this choice as it added more dimension to the song, as well as heightening that frenzied, high energy tone that permeates the tune.
Lyrically, I will be completely honest, they weren’t moving mountains for me, however, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Some songs need extremely hard hitting lyrics in order to match the heavy atmosphere of the music, however, because ‘Break Out’ is a piece that is so upbeat and frenzied, more catchy lyrics fit the vibe a whole load better. And on the subject of catchy, I will warn you now that once you listen to this song, the tune and the lyrics WILL NOT leave your head and you’ll be singing and dancing around your kitchen to it for days (trust me on this).
All in all, ‘Break Out’ is a floor filling track that almost demands to be heard live. And with a very busy and exciting year lined up for them, I suggest listening to SHADE and their new tune now, as I guarantee that by the summer, they will be everywhere!
