“TO GROW” is the magical new release from Scottish trio, Swim School. A follow up to their previous hit, “GIVE ME A REASON WHY”, “TO GROW” is probably one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard this year. It’s slow and stripped back, purely acoustic and purely emotional. It’s very different to their usual catalogue of shoegaze/grunge and alternative indie tracks but; Wow, does it certainly deliver!
The lyrics are quite heartbreaking to listen to, especially combined with Alice Johnson’s angelic vocals. This probably might be a bold statement, but I think this song would easily invoke tears from even the most impassive of individuals. In particular, I found the lyrics “It hurt me more than you will ever know/I had to lose a part of you to grow” poetic and full of tragedy. If there was another TV series like Normal People or One Day, I demand that this song makes the soundtrack.
The song is one of the first of the band’s “FROM THE DEPTHS” series – a collection of old demos the trio have rediscovered and will be sharing with fans. I’m intrigued to hear more if they’re anything like this gem, and it would be great to hear how the band’s experimented with songs over the years before defining their original sound.
Listen to the song below!
