Words: Rachel Moorhead.
With her first release of 2024, Hannah Mazey is back with her highly anticipated track ‘Pretentious’ – marking a bold new era for her music. The independent singer/songwriter from Wigan has previously explored lo-fi sounds but ‘Pretentious’, packed with punchy guitar, solidifies Hannah’s place in the indie rock genre.
‘Pretentious’ opens with a groovy bassline and that classic indie guitar tone we all know and love. Hannah’s vocal kicks in filled with attitude in the opening lines:
‘You’ve got another girl,
she’s called Jess
and I couldn’t care less’
I absolutely love these lyrics and combined with Hannah’s delivery, perfectly encapsulate the feeling of female rage in modern dating.
As a single woman in my 20s this track really resonated with me. I can imagine listening to this song at full volume in my headphones strutting away from an argument wanting to scream ‘You’re a pretentious prick’! I love the arc of this song, being naïve allowing toxic masculinity and manipulation to finding yourself and feeling empowered realising they are in fact just a ‘pretentious prick’.
For me, Hannah Mazey’s quick and clever lyrics are a breath of fresh air and bring something new and exciting to the indie rock genre. She oozes girl cool energy and her high notes in the bridge are nothing short of spectacular.
I think fans of Nieve Ella will love Hannah’s sound and I can definitely see them on a line-up together in the future.
In short, ‘Pretentious’ is a female indie rock anthem, and I highly recommend you give it a listen. Stream it below!
