Doncaster’s finest The Outcharms are back with their latest single ‘Eveline’ and i’m gonna call it, it is the song of the summer!
While the title suggests that this is yet another song about a girl, ‘Eveline’ (an homage to James Joyce’s novel ‘Dubliners’) is packed with way more nuance, as the band take us on a musical journey from growing up in South Yorkshire to now, and how their hometown has shaped them. Lyricist Curtis Cooper notes that ‘It’s the story of the struggle to break the shackles of the place you call home, and how your relationship with your hometown and those within it affects every other relationship you have in life.’ and this certainly shines through within the song, as lyrically it is outstanding. Somehow, Cooper is able to perfectly balance the lyrics between romantic and reflective, making the song completely timeless. One line that really stood out to me was ‘you’re bound by apron strings’ as it perfectly summarises the painfully youthful life in the inbetween that I feel everyone will have experienced / will experience at some point in their lives, where you’re not quite making it out of your hometown on your own, yet you don’t feel at ‘home’ there either.
It would be wrong of me to review this tune without talking about The Outcharms’ signature sound which again shines through spectacularly on this track. Full of shimmering guitar riffs, upbeat rhythms and distinctive vocals, it is clear that The Outcharms have really honed their craft. The combined efforts of Ross Fowler (lead guitar), Matthew Barron (bass), Curtis Cooper (vocals & rhythm guitar) and drummer Jordan ‘Taz’ Thompson (who is debuting with the band on this single) simply cannot go unnoticed, as each instrument blends together seamlessly to create that classic, upbeat ‘Smiths – like’ sound that is a trademark of the band.
With an impressive track record of supporting artists such as Reverend and The Makers, The Fratellis and Louis Tomlinson along with an exciting summer on the festival circuit coming up, it’s clear that The Outcharms are ones to watch!
