Even though the band’s third studio album, ‘Skinty Fia,’ was only released two years ago, Fontaines D.C. are back and stronger than ever. The group has declared that their fourth album, ‘Romance,’ is just around the corner. Their most recent single, ‘Starburster,’ has already received a lot of well-earned attention, clearly evolving their sound from their previous releases, proving that they are back and performing at their very best. It is a beautifully chaotic, genre-bending single, that perfectly encapsulates Fontaines D.C’s distinctive sound.
‘Starburster’ greets the listener with a stifling snare beat combined with Frontman, Grian Chatten’s signature lyrical delivery, an echoed guitar riff, and a repetitive nature that creates something so mesmerising. Inspired by Chatten’s experience with a panic attack, the first few seconds of the song feature a haunting, wheezing and almost claustrophobic synth that produces an emotional and compelling atmosphere. The music is dotted with sudden, savage gasps for air. The single presents a distinct contrast between the brief periods of sobriety and tranquilly and the feelings of elevated tension and adrenaline. This is demonstrated by the single’s intense tempo and unrelenting lyrics, which fade as the drum beat lowers and Chatten’s voice changes from rapping to quiet, gentle vocals.
‘Starburster’ is the second song on the track list for Fontaines upcoming album ‘Romance’, which is scheduled for release on the 23rd of August this year. In my opinion, this is the band’s best release to date. It is bold and fearless, it’s different from the typical Fontaines release, they haven’t lost their roots, it’s authentic and utterly brilliant. ‘Starburster’ is everything you’d want from Fontaines: powerful lyrics from the mind of Grian Chatten,
intense drumbeats, eerie guitar riffs and deep bass lines.
