Words: Ruby Corrigan.
Ahead of the release of their much anticipated second album ‘Midas’ which is to be released on the 30th august, Indie Rock outfit Wunderhorse have given fans of their music a tantalising morsel to tide us over till that point, taking form in a new single titled ‘July’, and it is incredible. If you have been following our page for long enough, you will know that all of us here at Rockstars highly regard Wunderhorse’s music, and this latest release is no different.
Before my first listen I was expecting a similar sound to that of the work the band has already put out, yet I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of a lyrical ballad like ‘Butterflies’ or an upbeat crowd pleaser such as ‘Teal’, ‘July’ is far heavier, loaded with intense reverb and gut punching vocals, similar to bands such as Deftones and Radiohead that really suit the musicians’ abilities.
It is particularly interesting to note how much the band’s sound has developed, as both this tune and the previous release ‘Midas’ both mark a significant change in their style, that I can only describe as bordering on nu metal. Rather than opening typical with a guitar riff that sets the mood for the tune, ‘July’ instead begins atmospherically with industrial noises and harsh amp feedback, before launching into an abrasive guitar riff and Jacob Slater’s signature rasping vocals. With heavy rumbling drums and continual reverb pulsating throughout the entirety of the track, ‘July’ is like listening to a heavy storm from the comfort of your own home – rapturous yet strangely comforting.
‘July’ is a captivating track that really highlights Wunderhorse’s development as a collective of musicians who are truly beginning to widen their artistic limits, and I hope the rest of the new album follows suit. Stream the tune below!
