Wigan born indie band Stanleys are back with their brand new single ‘He Knows’ – an infectiously comforting tune that marks the beginning of an exciting year of music for the band, as they prepare to release their four track EP ‘The Gallery’ later this year.
Speaking about ‘He Knows’, guitarist Jake Dormans commented how the tune ‘is an enigmatic narrative of the turbulence of modern life. Its lyrical emotion and musical elation make it one of our favourite tracks on the EP’. While I haven’t heard the rest of the EP, I can certainly see why it is one of their favourite tracks. One thing that Stanleys nail every time is balance. The instrumentals are in perfect harmony, with every element coming together seamlessly, both highlighting the musical prowess of each member as well as creating a comforting sound that feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket. Yet the balance that really shines through is the careful consideration between music and lyrics: while the rhythm itself is upbeat, it is poignantly contrasted with deeper, solemn lyrics that document feelings of loneliness and regret – highlighting the bittersweet nature of life.
One thing I love about Stanleys is how they really champion their roots, even in their music. Coming from Wigan, a small industrial town sandwiched between Liverpool and Mancester, two of the greatest cities for music, it can be easy to get influenced by the many established artists from that area and just become copies of them. Yet, the band’s dedication to using an authentic regional accent even while singing really makes them stand out from the crowd as its clear that they’re not trying to emulate what’s been done before, but instead make their own mark on the industry, as well as highlighting their hometown pride.
If you don’t already know the Stanleys, let this be your introduction, as they’re sure to make it in the big leagues. Stream ‘He Knows’ below!
