With their third full-length album, ‘Midnight Butterflies,’ UK indie-rock band Sea Girls
usher in a new chapter. Sea Girls have been one of the more well-known acts in the
ever-growing indie-rock scene since they initially stepped into the limelight. Their
ability to combine soaring anthems with a decidedly commercial flair has garnered
them a great deal of popular recognition and numerous noteworthy live appearances
on some of the largest festival stages in the nation. With the release of their third
studio album, ‘Midnight Butterflies,’ the band has broken free from their former label,
Polydor, and is expected to release some outstanding tracks.
The title track ‘Midnight Butterflies’ opens the album. The initial guitar riff is pulsating
with passion and can be likened to Kings of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody.’ The deeper
message behind this track concerns the feelings associated with falling deeply in
love with a girl. Lyrically, this song is saturated with appreciation and admiration. It is
catchy and inspirational. These songs are intense indie anthems, demonstrating that
Sea Girls are not straying from the standards we have for their sound.
The other songs on the album continue in this vein. While ‘Come Back To Me’
sounds as though it was destined to be performed live, ‘Polly’ chicly conforms to
every indie cliché. These tracks are standouts on this album. ‘Come Back To Me’
delves deeply into the moments that follow a breakup. Henry Camamile’s stunning
voice, combined with the opening guitar riff, which is subtle but incredibly emotional,
perfectly capture the highs and lows of a relationship. Camamile crafts a moving
narrative vignette on ‘Polly’ that is rife with melancholy and bittersweet recollections
of being apart from someone who you hold close. The lyrics, which alternate
between being ecstatic and hauntingly mournful, skilfully explore the depths of
human connection and alienation.
The raw acceptance of a complex reality is what distinguishes ‘Midnight Butterflies’
from a simple compilation of indie hits. Indeed, the boisterous energy is present –
catchy choruses are destined to light up an arena or festival field from start to finish.
Sea Girls have created something truly extraordinary; it is both moving and upbeat.
Certain lines and lyrics will undoubtedly strike a chord with fans, forging an
unbreakable verbal bond between listeners and the band. The creative depictions of
subjects such as nostalgia, future-dreaming, and self-discovery are satisfying with a
listener, creating a clear sense of relatability within this album. Despite the deeper
meanings behind these tracks, they are still guaranteed to get you up on your feet!
Even in songs that deal with melancholy subjects, Sea Girls’ vitality is evident
throughout. This record truly demonstrates the band’s confidence. The band have
gone from strength to strength in recent months and ‘Midnight Butterflies’ is certain to propel Sea Girls even farther into the spotlight. It is their best body of work to date,
and this album is a real treat for fans.
