Forever A Cool Girl: Suki Waterhouse -‘Supersad’ Review

Words: Ruby Corrigan

Suki Waterhouse, Britain’s favourite model, socialite, vampire wife (IYKYK) and musician is back with her latest single ‘Supersad’ and it is a MUST listen.

Climbing to fame in the 2010s with a blossoming modelling career, Waterhouse has been a key figure in the British fashion industry, yet what I enjoy most from her is her incredibly delectable array of musical releases, and ‘Supersad’ is no different.

What I love about this latest release is how different sonically it is from the rest of her music. ‘Supersad’ has been released as part of Waterhouse’s warm ups for her new album ‘Memoir of a Sparklemuffin’ which is set to release in September 2024. Yet, while the other songs we have heard from this era, including ‘OMG’, ‘Faded’ and ‘To Love’ showcase the artist’s maturity that she has gained through her experiences in both the fashion and music industry, ‘Supersad’ feels far more youthful, reminiscent of Waterhouse’s early days making it big.

Forever committed to making her music a well rounded, atmospheric listening experience, Supersad opens cheerfully, with a catchy beat and slightly distorted guitar riffs, evocative of the 2010s indie scene, the style of music Waterhouse would have been surrounded with when she was being propelled to stardom as a young model. This sense of youthfulness is further encapsulated in the lyrics, which document feelings of sadness, uncertainty and fear – all sentiments that sum up what it is like to be both adolescent, and navigating a career in the spotlight.

Vocally, Waterhouse never misses the mark, forever the cool girl, her dynamic, multifaceted vocals just add the perfect finishing touch to the track. In the verses it is delightfully deep and soulful, yet in the choruses it soars, delicately wavering above the main melody.

If you simply know of Suki Waterhouse as that model from the 2010s, but haven’t yet listened to her music – I highly implore you to, she is MUCH more than a pretty face.

I did just think of Suki Waterhouse as a model. A great piece of writing to nudge us into an appreciation of her vocal and lyrical talents too.
