Words: Gracie Erskine
After a casualty with his previous band ‘The Callers’, Paul Askew stitches the musical wound on his latest release, ‘Antidote’ does what it says on the tin and is the perfect fix for his musical recovery.
With recent commercial success, such as radio play across BBC Radio London and a feature on BBC Introducing , the Liverpool rocker is declaring to the world his revival, certified by his sold-out hometown headline at the iconic Jacaranda Club.
Over a simple and delicate jazz-infused riff, Askew’s scouse twang purrs over the track praising his ‘Antidote’ interest for keeping him in shape when he’s ‘seeing double’, begging for them not ‘let him go’. A pacifyingly eclectic arrangement embodies the track, synthesizing the 90’s indie elements vocally and lyrically, with the modern success of bedroom pop, birthing a unique hybrid for the Scouser’s discography.
Dislocated from his previous successes such as ‘Jump the Gun’, this most recent single drives a more introspective and intimate vein, cutting deeper into the skin than any of his other tunes.
Paul Askew prescribes himself as one to watch out for in 2024, and if you won’t take my word for it, you can get your own fix of ‘Antidote’ below.
