A self-proclaimed excursion into ‘nonsense,’ Hana Lili’s newest track ‘Figure It Out’ deserves to be taken a lot more seriously than the artist gives themself credit.
‘Figure It Out’ offers a candid inner monologue, coated with layers of touching nostalgia and feverish excitement, to create a perfect shockwave of bedroom pop. Where Lili’s previous singles ‘Basement’ and ‘Iconic’ considered her emotional jadedness, ‘Figure It Out’ temporarily steps away from this, exploring the excitement and euphoria that can be found when moving on with life and tackling a crush.
Lili’s words are a delightfully charming delve into the fantastical feeling of fancying someone and having that feeling reciprocated. She speaks with ardent confidence, telling herself what she wants and consciously exposing her emotions and desires to the world with lines like ‘Let’s get caught in the middle’ and ‘Does it matter if it’s wrong or right?’ There is a proud bravado in what Lili is saying as she openly explores the feelings that excite her, a satisfying change of pace for the typically sombre artist.
‘Figure It Out’ effortlessly mingles Lili’s translucent and dreamy vocals with its pulsing adrenaline, creating a masterfully primal, breezy summer hit. At times, the song can almost feel a little too intense when compared to Lili’s subdued vocals. Perhaps Lili is communicating an underlying fragility in what is said, highlighting that the emotions prevalent in her earlier tracks can never be fully concealed.
Nonetheless, it is clear that at least for this moment, Lili has found tranquility; a tranquility she shares with her audience through this engaging and blissful summer hit.
