Daring And Fearless: The Lathums – ‘No Direction’ Review

Words: Keira Knox

Wigan band, The Lathums are back following the release of their latest single ‘No Direction’. This marks their second release since their critically acclaimed sophomore album ‘From Nothing To A Little Bit More’ and comes in preparation for their biggest homecoming show to date, a sold-outheadline gig at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena.

One consistent element of a Lathums single is the incredible guitar solos by Scott Concepcion, which drive the track ‘No Direction’ with a strong indie-rock feel. ‘No Direction’ feels different to what we have come to expect from the band. Although Alex Moore’s voice sounds considerably rougher and deeper than it usually does, his distinctive accent is still audible throughout this song.

The song is about realising that the past cannot be changed and going back to your roots. The Lathums consistently craft lyrically affecting songs, and the Wigan lads are never without this sense of coming full circle. Hailing from the area myself, they have recently gained some local legend status, but their steadfastness in being modest and loyal to their origins is indisputable. This theme adds to the overall heavier tone by using vocals, instrumentals, and lyrics to convey a burning emotion.

‘No Direction’ demonstrates The Lathums’ versatility. Their skill as musicians is unrivalled, and ‘No Direction’ shows that they are capable of making daring, fearless indie anthems in addition to their acoustic ballads. The band have gone from strength to strength in recent years, their musical ability improving with each performance. It has been amazing to witness a local band go from performing at the Roller Rink to a Glastonbury stage. ‘No Direction’ marks a new era for The Lathums, and I for one cannot wait to see what comes next.
