Words: Dan Smith
How is this for a mouthful: Lexi Berg is an Swedish-American singer-songwriter emerging from the vibrant London music scene who has just released her new single ‘Lonely Satellite’ which she wrote in a field in Wales. Confused? Yeah me too. But what isn’t confusing is the talent on show here.
All of her native influences are on show here, from the acoustic folk sounding guitars leading the song, to the powerful keys in the foreground and the electronic soundscape which creates at atmospheric sound that wouldn’t be misplaced at Eurovision. And I mean that only as a complement.
I would be lying if I said I had heard of Lexi Berg before now, but after hearing ‘Lonely Satellite’ I went through her back collection, and my word is she a beautiful singer. There is an acoustic cover of ‘House of the Rising Sun’ which was just a delight, alongside her original tracks ‘Midnight Sun’ and ‘Into The Sea’.
But I would be willing to go out on a limb and say ‘Lonely Satellite’ is Lexi’s best release yet. It builds throughout the song, builidng towards this layered outro which gets your head shaking and your toe tapping before breaking back down to a somber outro as the words “this is what we do” are repeated. Lexi, if this is what you do, I’m sold.
Like a lot of the songs I choose to review, I always wonder how they would sound live, and I think this one would be beautiful. I can picture it closing a festival you know. The sky is dark but the lights on stage are powerful as Lexi and her backing band serenade a glowing audience. I really hope that happens, and when it does, I will be there!
Lexi Berg with ‘Lonely Satellite’, out now and you can stream it below to hear what all the fuss is about!
