A Culmination Of Their Growth As A Band: Wunderhorse – ‘Rain’ Review

Words: Ruby Corrigan

Laced with the same addictiveness as the rest of their recent releases, Wunderhorse’s new track ‘Rain’ is an enigmatic masterpiece.

‘Rain’, the band’s whopping fourth release of this year, and is set to be included in their highly anticipated second album ‘Midas’ which is to be released later this month. From what we have already been offered by the band this year, it’s clear that they have taken an experimental approach, with each release arguably fitting into entirely different genres from the other yet, What brings them all together as a cohesive piece of art is Wunderhorse’s signature sprinkling of grit and rawness — and ‘Rain’ is no exception.

Opening with an almost industrial sound similar to the scraping of metal before quickly jumping into a dynamic guitar riff akin to the late 60s psychedelic rock movement, Wunderhorse immediately re-establish their extraordinary ability to blend genres in order to create innovative and consistently exciting. As always, a real highlight of the track is Jacob Slater’s mesmerising vocals, that add the perfect combination of whimsicality and vulnerability to the song, highlighted by his falsetto tone and perfectly controlled vocal embellishments. What is so admirable about ‘Rain’ is how cathartic it is, I mean, upon first listen I think I felt every emotion ranging from elation to melancholy, perfectly proving the band’s complex understanding of musical composition. It never ceases to amaze me how every member is so in tune with their own instrument that they are able to use it not just to create a cohesive sound, but to invoke whatever emotion they wish in their listeners.

As a long time fan of Wunderhorse, it is always a treat to receive music from them, as it seems that with each release, the band goes from strength to strength, and ‘Rain’ truly feels like a landmark in their discography. Filled with a certain sensitivity that permeate all the tracks on ‘Cub’ along with an undercurrent of powerful intensity that we have seen from their most recent releases, ‘Rain’ is almost like a physical manifestation of their growth as a band, showcasing their own talents, musical preferences and most importantly, their familiarity with one another.

With appearances at multiple festivals, a headline tour with multiple sold out dates, and of course, the release of their album ‘Midas’ on the 23rd of August, 2024 is unequivocally the year of Wunderhorse. Stream ‘Rain’ below.
