‘Mr & Mrs Human Race’ is a perfect example of how Seb Lowe’s sound is a intricate tapestry stitched with a multitude of distinct sounds from a vast array of inspirations. Seb Lowe, who combines infectious melodies with political satire, has already cemented his place as one of Britain’s most distinctive voices.
Seb Lowe is joined on this song by the extraordinarily gifted Kate Couriel. The lyrics of this contentious political debate mirror the two’s amazing vocal harmonies, which combine to produce a type of musical conflict. What started as an acoustic solo track entitled ‘Mr Human Race’ has now become the most perfect duet between Seb and Kate. It’s amazing to think that Couriel had never written lyrics or sung before this song.
The track discusses how monotonous life is and how fundamentally self-centred it can be. Themes of social justice frequently result in very hefty, slow-tempo songs, but Seb and Kate’s wit, humour, and musical talents make sure that it’s conveyed in a subtle and approachable way.
In addition, the instrumentals help to turn this socially conscious song into an indie hit. The track’s initial seconds, with its thumping drum beats, convey an even greater sense of rage than the lyrics do. With the inclusion of voice distortion and catchy guitar riffs, the chorus takes on a more lively tone that gives it the potential to become an indie nightclub classic. Kate’s violin skills are simply remarkable, I’d never realised how much we needed a violin in these type of tracks until I saw them live last November.
