Words: Ruby Corrigan
Move over Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, Kati Cooke is here for the title of ultimate pop princess, and her latest single ‘waitin on u’ might just earn her her crown.
While ‘waitin on u’ falls into a genre from which I would not usually listen to, I honestly haven’t been able to get this tune out of my head since I first heard it – highlighting how a really good song can completely change your mind about a musical style.
Kati describes this tune as a ‘pop/rnb’ track, but there is also something extremely meditative about it. Between her almost reverbed vocals and the gently rippling melody, listening to this tune almost feels like floating in water or one of those sensory deprivation tanks, creating a notion of complete ease and relaxation. Speaking of vocals, Kati Cook is probably one of the most promising vocalists in the UK pop scene. With a beautiful blend of soft, almost whisper-like tones in the verse, with much more punchy and defined vocal riffing in the choruses, Kati Cook proves herself to be a multifaceted musician who is both sensitive and feisty.
While lyrically the song doesn’t particularly WOW me, the lyrics accurately describe the feeling of chasing someone while knowing they want you back, but are playing hard to get. They are fun, flirtatious and perfectly encapsulate the title of the tune, my only qualm is that I would have loved to have seen her utilise word play and poeticism to add some extra depth.
In short, this song is great – it is a fun, bubbly, pop anthem that has honestly pleasantly surprised me.
