‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ is a true reflection of Beabadoobee‘s journey as an artist. It not only represents an important milestone in her career but reflects her artistic maturity and evolution. The album shows influences from Fiona Apple and similar figures. Tracks such as the catchy ‘Ever Seen’ and ‘Take a Bite’ showcase Bea’s versatility by blending different genres, yet still sticking to her authentic style and sound.
The opening tracks contrast with one another, not only in lyricism but in sound too. The first single from the album ‘Take a Bite’ acknowledges Bea’s effort to seek comfort amongst the chaos, hence the chilled tone. ‘California’ is also an admirable track for its powerful lyricism in the record: “Got a fragile heart always thought you knew that/And you said from the start, ‘Guess that’s how we do that’/‘Know you’re stuck in the past and tired of living so fast’ instantly shows the significance of self-reflection upon the life lived by Bea which continues to reflect throughout the album.
Now halfway through the record, it only gets more honest and personal. The seventh track, ‘Coming Home’, is described by Bea herself as ‘A cute little love song with a weird non-existent structure’ which can be seen in the lyrics: ‘I’d do anything just to be with you/ To sit and watch you slowly wake’. The track feels very personal and makes it easier to understand Bea’s emotions from her perspective.
The high expectations for the album continue to be reached as we move forward to ‘One Time’, which follows the frustration with her partner where there was no effort in the relationship. Vocals paired perfectly with an electric guitar and a rocky beat: ‘Keep on faking just to make it/ What’s the point of fixing problems?’
The album concludes with the once again tuneful songs; ‘The Man Who Left Too Soon’ and ‘This Is How It Went’ in which Bea addresses the loss of her partner’s father. ‘At least we look at the same moon’/ I wish I met the man who had left too soon.’ The closure of ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ contains a delicate piano moment, which Bea compared to ‘The Way Things Go’.
The final tracks of ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ are crafted for listening pleasure, filled with immersive stories and impactful tunes, this record unquestionably enriches Beabadoobee’s collection of music and is another album to add to her triumphant discography. The album expertly showcases her musical evolution and talent, leaving a lasting impression on new fans and old. Overall, ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ serves as a certification of Bea’s artistry and promises an exciting future ahead.
