In March 2024, the Scottish indie band Black Dove returned, bringing new music and a revitalised mission to their newest phase of existence. Black Dove‘s new EP, ‘Broken Record,’ is expected to propel them to the pinnacles of indie success. Founded in 2016, the five-piece indie rock group Inverclyde is well-known for its enthusiastic live shows and devoted fan base. Black Dove, with musicians Sean Nelis on keyboard, Josh Cunningham on vocals and guitar, Conal Harrington on lead guitar, Ross McManus on bass, and Hamish McGown on drums, is ready to make 2024 their year and make a big comeback to the Glasgow music scene. After a much-needed break, fans are thrilled to hear the band’s signature sound once again.
With its indie vibe and nostalgic nod to Green Day’s ‘Dookie’ Era, the opening tune ‘Broken Record’, revives the defiant nature of punk whilst injecting an indie-rock spirit into the track. Fresh from a sold-out headline show at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, the band have picked up where they left off. The title track ‘Broken Record’ sets the tone for the EP and this new era for Black Dove, electrifying guitar riffs permeate through this track, giving it that indie-rock spirit Black Dove have become renowned for.
‘The Backroom,’ has incredible harmonies and promises to take you someplace else. The instrumentals, which blend catchy chords with softer beats and tones to create a distinctive summer vibe, are what really set this song apart. Though the lyrics of ‘The Backroom’ may hold a deeper, possibly melancholic message, the upbeat instrumentals easily let you forget about your troubles. Summertime festival fields will be filled with dancing to the sounds of electrifying guitar riffs. It sounds a lot like early Blossoms tracks, which are more cheerful and gentler than the mainstream indie fare.
‘Song For Summer’ is the perfect way to close this stellar EP. An acoustic track that intertwines stunning harmonies and heartfelt lyrics. I think this may be my favourite from the EP, it perfectly closes out summer 2024, allowing the listener to reminisce on fond summer memories.
Looking ahead to 2025, Black Dove knows that the momentum they have gained from their triumphant return will undoubtedly propel them to even greater accomplishments as they continue to enthral audiences and attract new fans with their contagious indie rock sound.
