A Poetic Critique Of A Hereditary Institution : Seb Lowe – ‘Make Me Your National Anthem’ Review

Words: Keira Knox

‘Make Me Your National Anthem,’ Seb Lowe’s most recent EP, is a perfect illustration of how his style is a complex tapestry sewn with a multiplicity of diverse sounds from an extensive range of influences. One of Britain’s most unique voices, Seb Lowe, has already established himself with his combination of catchy tunes and political levity. Fresh off the back of an incredible summer, his name appearing on an array of festival line-up’s, this EP demonstrates what is yet to come from the Manchester artist.

Seb Lowe’s iconic track ‘Personality Test’ opens the EP. The lyrics encapsulate the feelings and ideas that a great deal of people in the UK have about society as a whole. It’s a criminally underrated track, amassing just over 12k views on YouTube. ‘Personality Test’ deserves a place amongst your playlists.

‘Love Bomb’ is imbued with an intense atmosphere of vibrant indie-rock. ‘Love Bomb’ stands out as my personal favourite song on this EP, deviating from his typical politically charged sound. The track contains an abundance of powerful guitar riffs, and Lowe’s vocals are flawlessly complemented by the harmonies. This song has a very Blossoms flavour to it, with a cheerful quality that comes through in every line.

‘Jump Scare’ is a switch in terms of genre, I love how Seb Lowe can display his musical prowess across a plethora of genres and not be dictated by one specific sound. Personally, I think this is one of his best releases so far. This song is quite energetic, with a powerful tempo that matches nicely to his passionate voice. The song is incredibly underappreciated and has far more depth to its lyrics than meets the eye.

Seb Lowe is joined by the exceptionally brilliant Kate Couriel for ‘Mr & Mrs Human Race’. This heated political debate’s words reflect the two vocalists’ incredible harmonies, which come together to create a kind of musical battle. “Mr Human Race,” which began as an acoustic solo track, has evolved into the ideal duet between Seb and Kate. It’s remarkable to consider that before to this song, Couriel hadn’t ever composed her own lyrics.

Perhaps the most striking poetic critique of a hereditary institution the world has ever witnessed is found in ‘The Royal family’. His songs are poems that he creates and develops into deeper meanings that are left up to the interpretation of each listener. It’s a hidden gem that the indie world is waiting to discover.

Seb Lowe makes a bold statement with the title track of the EP, ‘Make Me Your National Anthem.’ It’s overall all sound is incredible, with an immense metal melody that continues to come back in a progressive rock theatrical style. His ability to take quite serious subject matter and nevertheless render them appear hilarious is quite astounding, and he accomplishes this by presenting them in a lively and eccentric manner. ‘Make Me Your National Anthem’ is political satire at its finest.
