It is well and truly the season of the witch with this new spell-binding track from the one and only Stevie Nicks. This new song seems to reflect the current political climate of America, with the overturning of Roe v Wade and Trump’s new Project 25; which plans to create a seemingly ‘Christian nationalist state’ stripping anyone who isn’t a Christian white man in ‘merica of basic rights. So it only seems fitting that Nicks, who has always advocated for women’s health and civil rights for all, releases this thought-provoking Ballard during the election season.
With a chorus encouraging the listener not to let them (the government? Men? Those in higher powers?) ‘take your power’ as they’ll ‘take your soul,’ it becomes more obvious the message behind the song, which is to fight back against this and fight for control once again. The significance of this song is not lost on its listener as this urgency presented by Nicks forces the audience to take a step back and think about the world they live in.
Although not her strongest song, this song has an incredible musical backing, as well as having another musical icon Sheryl Crow, it’s clear that this is an important song, and incredibly well-timed with the upcoming 2024 US presidential elections.
