A Powerful Expression Of Defiance : The Lathums – ‘Stellar Cast’ Single Review

Words By Keira Knox

The Lathums’ most recent track, ‘Stellar Cast’, is a powerful expression of defiance, vulnerability, pride, and the desire to let go. The catchy, indie-ska skit, which is only the band’s second new release of the year, comes from summertime recording sessions and will undoubtedly feed speculation about a third album to follow their previous, straight UK Official Album Chart No. 1 hits.

Guitarist Scott Concepcion rips through the opening section with a screeching vintage guitar riff while the first few seconds fade in with a tremendous storm-like sound effect. It’s distinctively The Lathums, iconic guitar licks that pulsate within the track. Throughout, the first booming start is maintained by drummer Ryan Durran’s thrashing tempo and Matty Murphy’s menacing bassline, which seamlessly supports Moore’s rhythmic vocals.

As 2024 proved to be an even more assured year of growth for the shrewd four-piece, ‘Stellar Cast’ takes the blustery, summer song, and immediate fan favourite No Direction out into the wild. The song revolves around singer and lyricist Alex Moore’s inexplicable dreams, with a thunderclap at the beginning and an infusion of quickfire lines, weeping guitars, and catchy, foot-to-foot beats and bass.

Speaking on the track, lead singer, Alex Moore states : “I got the inspiration for this song after one of our early gigs at the Brudenell in Leeds. We were joined by a stellar lineup. It was one of the rare times I’d had a bit too much to drink before going on stage. That night on the bus back, I had a crazy dream, probably fuelled by all the Jamaican ale I refer to in the song. In the dream, there was a strange figure at the end of my bed that I couldn’t get out of my head for a long time after.

The Lathums are already looking ahead to a busy 2025 after demonstrating their ability to make every show into a big event, not least with their annual improvements in outdoor headline appearances. This year, they brought it home with an 11,500-capacity show in the sunshine at Wigan’s Robin Park. They have already been confirmed to attend the three-day Isle of Wight Festival, which begins on Friday, June 19, 2025, on the Main Stage.

The Lathums continue to raise money and awareness for their own charity, the Chance To See Fund, which aims to provide young people in and around Wigan with creative opportunities, in addition to their musical endeavours. Earlier this year, the total amount accessible to local people, groups, and initiatives reached £25,000 thanks to donations from fans, the band, and special projects organised with the participatory arts charity Curious Minds. Together, the band and Curious Minds aimed to provide access to music, theatre, and other artistic endeavours for those who had no other means of doing so.
