I’m really not sure how to start this review, because I genuinely think I am going to struggle for the words when describing this track; but you best believe I’ll give it a good go.
Well, let me start off with some background on the band. A youthful, exuberant, Sheffield based four-piece who have been rapidly growing over the last year or so. They featured in our ‘Ones To Watch: Tramlines 2024’ piece, with our very own Ruby Corrigan stating:
With sing-along lyrics, high energy guitar riffs and pounding drum beats, their music is practically made for the field!
I often think when you hear ‘Sheffield’ and ‘band’ in the same sentence, you instantly think “not another Arctic Monkeys wannabe”, but that is just what Matilda Shakes aren’t. Admittedly, the opening riff screams of Jamie Cook, but very quickly you start to hear the Matilda Shakes sound. It’s aggressive, fast-paced rock to keep you on your toes. I have it on good authority this is one of their less-heavy tracks also, but for those modern rock n’ roll fans this will be right down your street.
As the band state:
‘Frankie’ takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions proving there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
They also state it could be their best single to date, and I would be inclined to agree. It is riff heavy throughout, providing the perfect backdrop for frontman James Hallam to absolutely sing his heart out.
For a young band, it sounds like everything came together perfectly for this track. You can hear the passion in every note, every riff, every drum beat, and as we move into the breakdown pre-solo at the backend of the track, you can hear the enjoyment. It’s hard to explain and I’ll urge you all to listen in order to understand, but you can tell the band are enjoying themselves in this track.
It is a great expression of their talents and I honestly think ‘Frankie’ will propel them to the next level!
