There aren’t many bands, especially in the folk and acoustic scene, that have proven to be as consistently good as The Lumineers. This quiet new release only reinforces that point. Each of their songs tells a heartbreaking story, leaving listeners with a sense of both hope and destruction—an incredible juxtaposition that only they can achieve.
‘Same Old Song’ is the perfect track for various moments: whether you’re gazing out of a bus window, going for a run, or simply contemplating life. The song immediately captivates the listener with its first beat and maintains that gripping energy throughout, creating a sense of anxiety that reflects the narrator’s own struggles as they seem to lose everything they hold dear.
The song draws parallels to classic tracks like Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’ and the line ‘You said the Boulevard Was Not That Bad.’ It paints a picture of a narrator who faces challenges and turns to the ‘Same Old Songs’ to cope.
Isn’t that relatable for all of us? Don’t we often turn to familiar songs for comfort when we’re struggling, even when we feel there’s little to lift our spirits?
‘I don’t know what’s wrong with me; I killed the mood so naturally.’
This track serves as a love letter to the music that supports us during tough times while also telling a story of a difficult experience and the raw anxiety of the narrator. It’s definitely a song that deserves multiple listens.
