‘I’m selfish and I’m lonely – Arm’s Length small talk I need some company’
This song screams Sam Fender (obviously it’s his song but that isn’t the point) it’s a perfect blend of longing and distance; craving the connection of another but desperately fearing the outcome and vulnerability that comes with it. First hearing ‘Arm’s length’ on a grainy TikTok of one of the first nights of his tour and then soon after at the Glasgow Night of said tour, ‘Arm’s Length’ has been stuck in my head ever since. On a completely honest note, it’s the Fender song I probably relate to the most; desperately wanting a connection but not wanting to reveal every part of my soul to someone that doesn’t need it.
‘Oh maybe you can do anything you want tonight but Do ya have to know me, know me inside out…to have a good time’
This song has all the trademarks of a perfect Sam Fender song – incredibly beautiful instrumentals, raw and honest lyrics and stunning vocals, with Brooke Bentham’s harmonies add a tree devotion to the song that increases its complexity. This song provides an impossibly distinctive sound of Fender, and it’s clear why fans have been asking for its release for the last few months
Overall this song is a perfect reflection on love and lust when you’re scared of connection. This song has been well worth the wait for Fender fans and it’s a beautifully complex track that almost forces its audience to sit and really listen.
