Everyone Says Hi Smash Adelphi – Gig Review

Words: Dan Smith

Everyone Says Hi, fronted by former Kaiser Chiefs drummer Nick Hodgson, found themselves gracing the Adelphi Club stage in Hull as part of Independent Venue Week. And it couldn’t have come at a better time for them, with their self-titled debut record being released on Friday 31st January.

The Adelphi Club has been host to many great bands over the decades, with the backdrop showing off the many recognisable names that have played over the years, and I’m sure that Everyone Says Hi is sure to be added to their repertoire.

In a brief interview with Nick, available below, he commented on his delight at playing to a packed-out room once more, and that is where credit is due for the Hull crowd who filled the room from back to front. It created a terrific atmosphere of people who were able to take in the performance in a very intimate setting. One thing I really enjoyed, and Nick commented on also, is the back and forth you can have with the crowd. Especially in these smaller venues, when every whisper can be heard around the room which created some funny moments – mostly when a chant was going for Tommy the technician, but then lead guitarist Tom Dawson was not granted the same recognition from the crowd. One of those ‘you had to be there’ moments for sure, but that can give you a good indication of the intimate nature of the show.

Onto the music, the night was opened up by Hull local Brodie Miller with his alt-indie sound capturing the audience’s attention. His old-school attitude and the look of distaste on his face were compelling, and during his final acapella piece before striking the microphone to the floor, every single person was hanging onto every word. Brodie’s lyricism leaves little to the imagination, and I can tell you now, although the first time I’d ever seen him, it won’t be the last.

We then move on to Everyone Says Hi. They played a terrific setlist (See Below) which features their hits ‘Lucky Stars’ and ‘Brain Freeze’, as well as a cover of Kaiser Chiefs ‘Modern Way’. Nick has always been a terrific songwriter, and his talent was clearly on show as the night progressed. As co-owner Harry commented on Nick and Kaiser Chiefs: “You can clearly see who was the talented one”.

The chemistry of the band was clear, with all of them looking happy and appreciating the work of one another. Everybody even had a good laugh when Nick forgot the words to his most powerful song he wrote when he found out he was having a baby.

Everyone Says Hi are an upcoming band who’s debut album is out this Friday, and we will be reviewing that also. Every single song means something, and you could sense that as they played through the setlist on a cold, drizzly Tuesday night in Hull.

I had an absolutely terrific time, and it seems as though every person who was lucky enough to be there did also. We have some video’s going live across our social media so make sure you’re following us there so you don’t miss them, as well as our short interview with Nick Hodgson which is out Friday.
