If Daisy Foster has started as she means to go on, she will go far.
Her debut single, ‘SwaN’ is an R&B number about the dangers women face when walking alone at night, and the precautions taken to protect oneself. Such lines as ‘[the streets] are stained with female blood’ and ‘why won’t they help us’ show that Daisy is not afraid to express her frustration and call out for change on this heartbreakingly relevant subject.
Every part of the production has been carefully considered to compliment and emphasise the subject matter. The kick drum is reminiscent of a heartbeat and the electronic production is well juxtaposed by the blues – inspired guitar. While listening, you can’t help but feel this song is the more sinister sister of ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World’.
Yet, despite the talent of the instrumentation, Daisy’s voice is still the star of the show. Soulful and emotive, with a clear tone and beautiful phrasing, it really brings home the feelings of vulnerability, disappointment and fear discussed within the song.
Ending with a single telephone ring, Daisy leaves the listener haunted and incredibly moved.
