A Remarkable Showcase For a Debut: Woman Wept – ‘Short Change’ Review

Words: Rosie Russell

This sensual track by the London-based band Woman Wept is an incredible piece of music. Written in 2024, ‘Short Change’ is a strong contender for your heartbreak or ‘bad bitch’ playlist. The band describes the song as ‘something that started as an acoustic demo and evolved into just under three minutes of feminine rage, fuzzy basslines, and melancholy guitar.’ I don’t think I could describe it any better; this song is a ‘red lipstick’ song—powerful and distinctly feminine.

The instrumentals in this track serve as a remarkable showcase for a debut, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats with every beat. Combining a funky, fuzzy bassline, a potent guitar, and addictive drum rhythms creates an electrifying experience that continually surprises and engages the audience.

Another compelling aspect of this song is its storyline, which explores the emotional complexity of being in a relationship that once felt safe. It poignantly captures the realization of ‘chasing red herrings,’ reflecting on the disillusionment of receiving far less than what you invested in the relationship. This theme resonates deeply, highlighting the imbalance and heartache that can arise from unreciprocated feelings.

Overall, this is a band you need to add to your radar. The quality of this debut single promises much more in the future, and I personally can’t wait to see what Woman Wept has in store for us.
