A Brilliant Showcase of The Northwest’s Finest: Scruff of The Neck Live at The Castle Hotel

Words: Ella Arsmtrong

Scruff of The Neck Live arranged a brilliant gig showcasing new talent from the Northwest, giving artist a chance to get their music out there to new and returning audiences. The bands chosen demonstrated fresh talent and professionalism despite being newer artists on the music scene.

The gig was extremely well run with bands gracing the stage in a timely manner giving the audience an exciting, magical time.

The Castle Hotel is an intimate venue perfect for smaller artists to get their start in the performing industry. The talent shown in the show was phenomenal and has the potential to progress onto bigger venues… and yes I would definitely attend again. The band Grow kicked off the night with a few original songs in the indie-rock genre. Their songs such as ‘Swallows’ and ‘Take It and Run’ filled the venue with a fun unique vibe starting off a brilliant interactive set. The crowd stayed engaged for the entire set which is a big achievement for smaller artists in smaller venues. This set out did anything expectations I had going into this event as they provided smashing entertainment and beautifully written music.

Following Grow, Dangerous Brian were next to the stage. They rocked the stage with original music in an authentic rock and roll style. They created an amazing atmosphere which kept the crowd engaged. Despite a few technological issues at the start of their set, this didn’t stop them from remaining professional and rocking The Castle Hotel.

Finally, rounding off the beautifully selected supporting acts, the band Kiwi kept the crowd excited with an interactive set of original songs with fun and meaningful lyrics. Their vibe was alternative/indie which gave their songs a unique style. Their songs including ‘Lost & found’ had an appealing and attractive style keeping the audience moving and excited. A great choice to finish off the supporting acts getting the crowd ready for the main event.

To end a fabulous night, Mayflower finished off the set with a calming vibe. Two members of the band provided the audience with graceful memories and soft vocals. They performed original songs such as their newest single ‘My Girl’ with impactful, strong, emotive lyrics reaching the audience on a personal level. The crowd was possessed by their calming melodies and memorising stage presence. They rounded the set off with a cover ‘a little respect’ by Erasure. Their voices blended beautifully with the song leaving the audience in awe of their talent.
