Unveiling their debut EP as Permanent (Joy), ‘Despair Will Make Me A Modern Man’ is a perfect body of work for new listeners to discover. With a mixture of steady and fast-paced tracks, it’s a recipe for any indie/alternative fans new favourite EP.
‘Josephine’ is a calming opener, easing the listeners into the compilation with a steady melody. ‘Save My Life’ picks up the pace, bringing forward a rhythm made for swaying along on your commute to work. ‘Aeroplane’ follows on, being released ahead of the EP, fans are familiar with its musical revelations. ‘Sometimes’ and ‘I Wanna Go Home’ are favourable tracks from the EP, their lyricism and instrumental character are a perfect pairing to create these memorable tracks. Closing out the EP, ‘Untitled’ is unique and expressive. Taking inspiration from the book ‘Fight Club’, Permanent (Joy) acknowledge its poetic and boundary-pushing nature, claiming it’s the song they’re “most proud of.”
Promoting the EP within their support slot for Inhaler’s recent UK tour, the buzz around the release has been growing, gaining new listeners throughout the tour, fans have been excited to finally have their hands on the recorded versions. Celebrating the release the following day with a headline sold-out show at the Jacaranda Bar in Liverpool, the songs were elevated with a passionate atmosphere, with fans dancing along to the rhythms.
