Love, Loss, And Loud Guitars: BIIG TIME’s New Single Is A Force – ‘Bigger Than Nothing’ Review

Words: Sarah Milligan

Love has always been a complex challenge for musicians – and BIIG TIME are no exception to its power.

With the distortion turned high on their electric guitars and pages filled with self-deprecating lyrics, the Australian duo– Johnny Took (of DMA’s) and his brother Matthew Took (of PLANET)– have produced a beautifully desperate single, reminiscent of an epic 80s power ballad with their latest release: ‘Bigger Than Nothing.

Combining classic childhood yearning with a self-effacing charm that comes only with age, BIIG TIME’s use of forceful drumming and robust power chords have created a song that thrives on desperation and longs to be played in a sold-out arena.

The Lush-esque chorus – or cry for help – that comes back with each refrain: “I couldn’t be there/you wanna know why/you gotta know that/ I’m just not better than him”, highlights the clear emotional turmoil experienced throughout the song, while also drawing attention to the frenzied guitar occurring in the background of the harsh vocals at the forefront.

The pre-chorus is much the same: “You know I can’t find another to hold/Come on, pull me down slow” – mimicking the unmistakable draw of love with an excited instrumental.

The song slows for a moment of anticipation, stripping back to quiet vocals and a chugging guitar just itching to relaunch. Suddenly, we are swept back into the frantic chorus before ending on a long, distorted note – an uncomfortable ending, but a fitting one all the same.

Huge congratulations to BIIG TIME – ahead of a month-long UK tour, they have released a truly maniacal single that ultimately portrays the irresistible pull of love, and thus its constant battle with human emotion and inner self-sabotaging.
