Words: Josh Parsonage
With a dream-like sound, Sunday Works channel a meditative emotional mantra– soft, immersive, and hauntingly intimate.
The track drifts into the stillness and peace of love, evoking a serene emotional space. The New York pop duo craft a bright soundscape, layering it with imagery that echoes the chorus’ proclamation of ‘devotion’.
‘Turned To Gloss’ opens with a demand of the listener: “Your attention, your attention”. An importance is placed on the song’s message, an effort to underline the clarity and intensity of the relationship at its core. The verse builds a sense of submission, laying bare a quiet trust that feels both intimate and surreal. This vulnerability is reflected in the ethereal imagery: “I am in your hands then up / Our kisses make all the clouds go still”.
The chorus epitomises this: “Devotion / See me through”. The repetition of this is beautifully simple, stripped back, open, and deeply honest. It’s a quiet plea and a powerful affirmation all at once. Paired with heavenly, gloriously pitched vocals, the lines become more than lyric, they become incantation. We are wrapped in a poetic sensuality, suspended in the emotional weight of surrender and desire.
Lizzie Ferrell and Jackie Simons fashion something which leaves its ambient presence and emotional radiance locked to the back of your mind beyond listening. ‘Turned To Gloss’ could no doubt soundtrack the most intimate moments of a romance epic, painting something tender with its liminal presence.
The band are just five tracks deep into their indie-pop journey, yet already display a mature, refined musicianship that belies their short time together. With each release, they demonstrate a thoughtful, evolving sound that invites a keen curiosity toward what they may gift us next. Their ability to produce emotionally resonant, sonically rich music suggests that this is only the beginning of something truly exciting.
