Miles Kane announces next album ‘Sunlight in the Shadows’ along with the release of first single ‘Love is Cruel’

Words: Emily Robbins

Miles Kane has staged his return with the announcement of his next album ‘Sunlight in the Shadows’ which is set for release on October 17th, and is produced by none other than Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.

It has been an exciting year for Kane, with him set to go on the road with The Black Keys for their summer tour, following his set to mark the closure of the iconic Leadmill in Sheffield.

The first offering from the new album comes in the form of ‘Love is Cruel’, which talks of finding solace in being on your own.  The track opens with with the banging of drums before falling into a multi-layer of guitars, percussion and vocals. The track’s catchy rhythm is accompanied by a familiar mixture of high pitched yet husky vocals, and dreamy guitars which are reminiscent of The Beatles and more recently, Arctic Monkeys, and Kane and Turner’s project The Last Shadow Puppets.

The track features Auerbach on the backing vocals and guitars, and the pair have set the bar high for what’s to come. Writing and producing the entire album together, the album also comes with contributions from The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, Cage the Elephants’ Nick Bockrath and many more.

‘Sunlight in the Shadows’ track listing was released along with the announcement:

         1. Love Is Cruel

         2. Electric Flower

         3. Sunlight In The Shadows

         4. Coming Down The Road

         5. Always In Over My Head

         6. Blue Skies

         7. My Love

         8. Without You

         9. Sing A Song To Love

        10. Slow Death

        11. I Pray

        12. Walk On The Ocean

Speaking about ‘Love is Cruel’ Kane said:

“The track begins with “she’s a midnight scooter rider,” which is one of my favourite opening lines to a single. It sets the tone lyrically and musically for what’s to come. Think Clint Eastwood and Judy Garland in the desert at dusk!” and the influence from these eras is evident even from the track titles.

Admittedly, I always find myself returning to Miles’ debut ’ debut ‘Colour of the Trap’ and ‘Don’t Forget Who You Are’ but this release has got me excited to further explore his more recent discography in the lead up to what is set to be an exciting couple of months for the singer.

‘Love is Cruel’ has set the bar high for ‘Sunlight in the Shadows’ and I am certain that what follows will live up to it.
